At least eight construction workers, including two women, were killed and several others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a pickup van in South Surma upazila of Sylhet on Sunday morning.Four of the deceased were identified as Badrul, 30, son of Sujat Ali under Jalalabad Police Station in the city, and M Suruj Ali, 60, son of late Khoram Ali, Munni, 35, daughter of Abdul Basir, and Faridul, 35, son of late Nur Salam of Bhatipara village in Dirai upazila of Sunamganj. The injured include Torab Ullah, 60, son late Shukur Ullah of Kalibari in the city, Ramin, 40, son of late Alim Uddin of Ambarkhana, Afroz Mia, 40, son of Mallik Mia of the same area, Hafiza Begum, 30, daughter of Baruzzaman of Paumara village in Companiganj upazila, M Alamgir, 32, son of Rafique Mia of Amkandi village in Chunarughat upazila of Habiganj, Ravu Akhter, 25, daughter of Khokon Mia of Gachhtala village in Dharmapasha upazila of Sunamganj, and Raja Mia, 45, son of Zafar Ali of Bhatipara of Dirai upazila.
The accident occurred around 6:15am on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in the Telibazar area.
According to locals, a pickup carrying several workers was heading towards Sunamganj from Sylhet when it collided with a truck loaded with jackfruits coming from the opposite direction.
Md Monjurul Alam, additional deputy commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, said the deceased include two women.
Four people died on the spot following the crash, while three others succumbed to their injuries at MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, he said, adding that another victim died while undergoing treatment at Sylhet Women's Medical College Hospital.
The injured were admitted to different hospitals.
