Shahbagh witnessed intense clashes between students and police on Tuesday as protests demanding the postponement of the 47th BCS written examination schedule escalated into violence. Several police personnel were injured during the confrontation, and demonstrators vandalized a police pickup van.The unrest flared around 5:35 pm when students suddenly charged at police officers in front of the Zainul Abedin Fine Arts building at Dhaka University. As police attempted to disperse them, the protesters ran towards TSC. During the chase, several students were injured. One of them, a student named Shakil, was found lying injured under the metro rail tracks and was later taken to the hospital by police.
Repeated clashes between police and demonstrators have created widespread panic in the area, completely halting vehicular movement at Shahbagh.
Around 5:45 pm, protesters regrouped and attempted to advance again, pelting stones and brick chips at police. Coming from the TSC area, they lit fires on the road in front of the Zainul building and staged demonstrations. They were also heard chanting offensive slogans against Mobashwer. In response, several hundred police personnel have been deployed, with water cannons and additional forces kept on standby. Senior officials, including DC of Ramna Division Md. Masud, are present at the scene.
Earlier, around 4:30 pm, the first phase of clashes broke out between students and police over the demand to defer the 47th BCS written examination schedule. The confrontation has continued intermittently since then.
