Chief Adviser Holds Emergency Meeting on Earthquake Risk Management

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus held an emergency meeting with relevant experts and government officials to review earthquake preparedness in the country. The meeting took place on Monday (24 November) at the Chief Adviser’s Office in Tejgaon, Dhaka. Chaired by the Chief Adviser, the discussion focused on assessing earthquake risks, strengthening preparedness measures, improving coordination among agencies, and ensuring rapid response mechanisms.

In the evening, the Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary, Abul Kalam Azad Mazumder, briefed journalists about the meeting.

Four Earthquakes in 31 Hours

Between Friday (21 November) and Saturday (22 November), Dhaka and surrounding areas experienced four earthquakes within a span of about 31 hours.

The strongest quake, measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale, struck on Friday morning. Its epicenter was located in Madhabdi, Narsingdi—approximately 25 kilometers from Dhaka.

Casualties and Damage

According to official information:

  • Narsingdi: Five people, including a father and son, lost their lives.

  • Dhaka: Four deaths were reported.

  • Narayanganj: One child died.

Across these three districts, a total of 10 people have died, and more than 500 individuals have been injured.
