Earthquake in Narsingdi: Panic Causes Stampede, Leaving 5 Dead and Over 100 Injured

Five people were killed and more than a hundred injured in Narsingdi after widespread panic during an earthquake led residents to rush out of multi-story buildings and open areas. The information was confirmed by Narsingdi Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Anwar Hossain in an official statement on Friday.

  • Chinishpur, Gabtali: Construction materials from an under-construction building fell on several people. An 8-year-old child and his father later died during treatment.

  • Palash, Malita Westpara: An elderly man was trapped under the collapse of his mud house and died on the way to the hospital.

  • Palash, Danga: A man died after falling while running in fear during the earthquake.

  • Shibpur, Joynagar: A man fell from a tree during the tremor and died while being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Damage and Impact

  • Ghorashal Power Plant: A fire broke out at the substation but was brought under control. Several production transformers were damaged due to the quake.

  • Ghorashal Palash Fertilizer Factory: Urea production was temporarily halted after machinery automatically shut down from vibration. Technical inspections are ongoing.

  • Structural Damage: More than a hundred buildings, including the District Commissioner’s office and the circuit house, developed cracks following the tremor.
